We are a young and innovative book and B2B publisher looking for a junior designer with some industry experience of print design and production. This is the ideal role for someone with creative flair and an enthusiastic approach to play a key role in the company.
The role presents an exciting opportunity for a design graduate to gain exposure to many types of design namely marketing/sales literature, magazine/layout design, front cover book design, basic html web design and print production. The junior designer will be working on the print publications for Crimson Business, some books published by Crimson Publishing and event and book marketing literature and websites.

Requirements
• Previous print design experience using Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and Quark
• Experience of creating PDF files using Adobe Acrobat and sending artwork to print
• Minimum 3 months relevant industry experience (whether work experience placement or first job)
• Creativity is a pre-requisite
• Full working knowledge of MS Office
• Educated to degree level in relevant subject – i.e. graphic design degree
• Excellent understanding of English
• Good oral and written communication skills
Desirables
• Print buying experience
• Knowledge of pre-press processes
• Experience of picture research and buying from image libraries
• Creative design experience using Dreamweaver
• Basic HTML

Specific responsibilities include
1. Responsible for the creation of marketing/sales materials including: event brochures, print advertisements, direct mail flyers, media packs, book catalogues, exhibition graphics, book point-of-sale material, posters and booklets
2. Responsible for a laying out a section of Growing Business magazine each month
3. Occasional creation of advertorials for clients and amends to print ads
4. Maintaining a print production schedule for the magazine and related event brochures and marketing materials
5. Day to day liaison with printers to ensure Crimson Business magazines, brochures and marketing materials are printed and delivered to correct destinations on time
6. Pre-flighting adverts for the magazines (growing business and customer media), and event brochures.
7. Creation of final PDF pages for all crimson business print publications
8. Maintenance of electronic archive of all magazine, brochure and marketing materials sent to print
9. Maintenance of central area of electronic marketing collateral to include logos, cover shots, event picture archive
10. Occasional book cover design for Crimson, Trotman, White Ladder Press and Vacation Work titles
11. Picture research for book covers
12. Assisting the marketing team with print buying for promotional materials and sourcing quotes from printers and / or mailing houses for specials such as tips-ons and belly-bands
13. Amends (text and image) to existing html websites using Dreamweaver with view to creating event websites from scratch depending upon experience
Interview
We’ll be running a two stage interview process. If you are invited for interview we will require you to complete a competency test on InDesign and Photoshop. You should also be prepared to bring the most recent and relevant samples of your work to demonstrate your creativity.

About Crimson Publishing
Crimson Publishing publishes quality non-fiction books. The current portfolio includes the Vacation Work Publications portfolio of travel, work, living and property guides; Trotman career and educational books; and a growing list of business, travel and other non-fiction titles. In total Crimson Publishing will release approximately 120 new books in 2008.
About the Job
We are looking for an Assistant Production Editor to work on a range of titles, initially on the Trotman imprint. This is a new role where the successful candidate will be responsible for seeing books through the production process from receipt of manuscript through to delivery of bound stock to the warehouse. The ideal candidate will be a self-starting first jobber or someone with publishing experience looking to take their next step. Some training will be available if needed. The successful candidate will need to display the energy, ambition and commitment to help the business grow quickly.

Specific Responsibilities
1) Manage production of Trotman’s non-directory titles, ensuring that each book is delivered on time and on budget.
2) Assessing manuscripts and briefing copy-editors.
3) Prepping scripts for setting and briefing typesetters.
4) Briefing proofreaders and indexers; sending proofs to authors.
5) Collating corrections and returning proofs to typesetters for correction.
6) Ordering final text pdf files.
7) Liaising with printers/binders; sending book and cover to press; approving running sheets.
8) Administrative duties will include (but are not limited to): keeping the schedule up to date, filing, and liaising internally with the marketing and editorial departments. Some limited copy-editing and proofreading may be required.
